Music
COURSES At Sydney Girls High School, all Year 7 and 8 students complete the mandatory music course - two periods in Year 7 and two periods in Year 8. Year 7 is primarily a concept-based program, whereas in Year 8 the course is more topic-based, completing courses such as Music in Radio, Television and Film, Music of the Stage. Students may then elect to continue with music in Year 9 and 10. In this course music students participate in a wide range of performance, composition and listening activities through a variety of topic areas such as Music of the 20th Century Stage, Music from the Classical Period and Music from the Romantic Period. Students are encouraged to specialise on an instrument or in voice and this participation in performance is complemented by the variety of music-enhanced extra-curricular activities offered at the school. In senior years, Sydney Girls High School offers Music Course 1 and Music Course 2 as well as Extension Studies. The Music Department of Sydney Girls High School provides facilities of a high standard. Apart from two spacious music rooms, there are four practice areas and a resource room equipped with a Music MIDI setup - which is ideal for senior students and electives. Stringed, wind instruments and guitars are available for hire and in the classroom students have access to keyboards and guitars.
